Ernie Harwell on the call

We’ve been without “Ernie” Harwell for four years now.  He passed away at 92 in the spring of 2010.

I didn’t follow the Detroit Tigers growing up, but I was a big enough baseball fan to know that Harwell was as huge there as Harry Caray was in Chicago.

It’s a magical thing, what a good sportscaster can bring to a broadcast.

Here he is with the final call of the 1984 World Series, as Larry Herndon races towards the foul line to make the catch.
