NL Day 6: Good and Bad in L.A.

Orel Hershiser

Orel Hershiser

Dodgers 6, Astros 0
The good news is that rookie pitcher Orel Hershiser tossed 6 shutout innings to pick up the win in his first outing for Los Angeles this season. That he handed the ‘stros their first loss of the season was icing on the cake. The bad news is that the was injured and will miss a turn in the rotation. Bill Russell (.526) had four hits for the Dodgers and Pedro Guerrero (.423) had three to continue their hot starts for the 3-3 Dodgers.

Cubs 2, Phillies 1
Chicago gets a big win, handing the Phils their first loss of the season. With a tie score in the 8th, Ryne Sandberg leads with a walk, steals 2nd, then scores on an RBI single by Gary Matthews. Lee Smith comes on in the 9th to try and pick up a save after blowing one on Opening Day.  He walks the first two men before getting Ivan DeJesus on a liner to Leon Durham at 1st, pinch-hitter Sixto Lezcano on a strike out, and Juan Samuel on a tapper back to the mound. Scott Sanderson (W 1-0) went 8 innings for the win while Larry Andersen (L 0-1) takes the loss out of the Phillies bullpen.

Expos 5, Pirates 0
Steve Rogers (W 1-0) tosses a 3-hit masterpiece to give Les Expos their first win of the season. Tim Raines had 3 hits and a pair of steals. Larry McWilliams (L 0-2) took the loss for the Bucs.

Braves 7, Reds 4
Cincinnati’s run at being the only team without a win is still going strong, while the Bravos improve to 3-1. Rick Camp (W 1-0) only went 5 innings, but looked strong, allowing 2 runs (1 earned). Dale Murphy started out bad, striking out twice and hitting into a DP, before ending with a 2-RBI triple and a double. Claudell Washington hit a grand slam as part of a 6-run 7th inning that took a 2-1 lead away from the struggling Reds.

Mets 6, Giants 2
George Foster and Hubie Brooks homered in a 4-run 1st inning for the Mets, who cruised to an easy victory. Bruce Berenyi (W 1-0) went 8 innings with 2 unearned runs allowed.
