NL Day 19: Cubs, Phillies Duel in the East

Steve Trout

Steve Trout

Cubs 4, Phillies 2
Chicago broke a virtual tie with Philadelphia atop the NL East. Steve Trout goes the distance for Chicago, picking up his first win of the year. Keith Moreland had three hits for the Cubs.

Giants 9, Padres 8
Have I mentioned before that I hate playing games with San Francisco? Yes, it’s another high-scoring shootout with the Giants climbing out of a 6-4 hole, led by a pair of homers by Chili Davis. Davis homered in the 7th to pull them within a run and then homered in the 8th to snap a 7-7 tie. Graig Nettles had a pair of homers for San Diego in the loss. Eric Show went down with an injury after 2 innings of work, which probably means his place in the rotation will be filled by Dave Dravecky, who has been fantastic out of the bullpen thus far. Dravecky went 4 innings, allowing no earned runs (3 unearned).

Braves 7, Pirates 3
Gerald Perry had three hits and Dale Murphy homered in a convincing Atlanta win that got them back to .500 on the season. John Candelaria threw 8 innings, allowing 6 runs (2 earned) in the loss. The Pirates lost center fielder Marvell Wynne (.306, 4 3B) for 3 games.

Astros 2, Mets 1
Bob Knepper goes all 9 for the win, out-dueling Dwight Gooden and the Mets. Knepper retired 11 of the last 12 batters he faced, finishing with 7 strikeouts. Gooden had a rough 2nd inning, allowing a pair of runs on two hits and a walk, but was fantastic other than that, striking out 8 in as many innings of work.
