AL Day 59: Red Sox Running Low On Time

Milt Wilcox

Milt Wilcox

Tigers 2, Red Sox 0
Time is running out for Boston, who lost their 3rd straight and to 1st place Detroit no less. Kirk Gibson put the Bengals ahead 1-0 with a 3rd inning sac fly and Darrell Evans’ solo shot (4th) in the 4th made it two-zip. Milt Wilcox went 7-plus innings for his 1st win of the season and Willie Hernandez notched his 10th save, improving his ERA to 1.47 with 2 shutout innings of work that included a pair of double plays. With their 4th straight victory, Detroit is poised to wrap things up soon here.

Yankees 16, Athletics 1
New York crushed the A’s with 27 hits including an astounding 11 doubles. Don Mattingly had 5 hits (3 doubles), while Bobby Meacham, Oscar Gamble and Omar Moreno each had four hits. Not all great news for the 2nd place Yankees, however. Dave Winfield was injured on a play at the plate and suspended for 3 games for what was taken to be a dirty slide. And starting pitcher Marty Bystrom (3.1 IP, 0 ER) went down with an injury and is most likely shut down for the remainder of the season. If New York sneaks into the postseason, he could potentially be available. Bystrom is 3-2 with a 3.80 ERA in 8 starts.

Blue Jays 10, White Sox 5
It wasn’t a strong outing for Dave Stieb, who entered the game with a nifty 2.57 ERA for the Jays. But he still picked up the W, improving to 6-4 as Toronto chased Chicago started Tom Seaver from the game after just 1.2 innings of work. Willie Upshaw went 3-for-5 with a double and 2 RBI to lead the Toronto offense.

Twins 16, Mariners 4
Minnesota gave Mike Smithson (8-3) all the support he needed, torching Seattle’s spot starter Salome Barojas. Barojas finished with 10 runs allowed (6 earned) in 4.2 innings of work. He allowed 9 hits and walked 6. On the offensive side, Kirby Puckett went 4-for-6 with a triple, double, 4 RBI and a pair of uncharacteristic walks. Gary Gaetti went 5-for-6 with 3 doubles and Tim Teufel was 3-for-6 with a homer (3rd) and double. Alvin Davis hit his 9th homer of the season for the M’s. Barojas entered the game 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA in fantastic relief work this season. He left with a 3.41 ERA.
