Chicago Cubs closer Lee Smith started the bottom of the 8th with a 3-run lead, but the inning ended with the Houston Astros just 2 runs back.

With one out, game 1 hero Enos Cabell doubled.

With two outs, Jim Pankovits pinch hit for catcher Mark Bailey and hit a ball into shallow right field.

Keith Moreland – who has done well with the bat at times but is a bit of a butcher in the outfield – misplayed the ball, allowing it to skip past him for a two-base error that let Cabell score an unearned run.

Denny Walling pinch-hit for relief pitcher Julio Solano and grounded out hard to Larry Bowa at short.

After 8 innings of play, Chicago leads 7-5, trying to tie up the NLCS at 1 game each.
