The Chicago Cubs got their leadoff man on base in the top of the 8th but failed to score and are now three outs away from losing the World Series to the Kansas City Royals.

Ryne Sandberg led off the inning with a base hit off of Bret Saberhagen, who is still pitching despite the availability of usually lock-down closer Dan Quisenberry.

Gary Matthews grounded into a 5-4 fielder’s choice and was then lifted for pinch-runner Davey Lopes, who stole second base.

But Saberhagen settled down, striking out Leon Durham and Thad Bosley to end the threat.
