Bob Knepper
Houston got a game back on San Diego in the West, with both teams and Atlanta all 2 games over .500 now. Bob Knepper went 7.2 innings for the win while DiPino went the remaining 1.1 for his 2nd save. Jerry Mumphrey and Denny Walling each had RBI doubles for the ‘stros in the win.
Expos 5, Pirates 4 (12 innings)
Montreal got 7.2 innings of shutout work from their bullpen, leading to a 12-inning win over visiting Pittsburgh. Mike Ramsey, who was playing second base as part of a double switch, lifted a sacrifice fly to Lee Mazzilli in left field, bringing Tim Wallach home from 3rd to end the game.
Mets 4, Dodgers 1
New York won its 3rd straight to move to the top of the East while Los Angeles dropped their 3rd in a row. Bruce Berenyi (W 2-0) went 7 innings allowing 1 unearned run to maintain a 0.00 ERA this year. The sole run allowed came in odd fashion when Dave Anderson walked. Ball four got past the catcher Mike Fitzgerald, allowing Anderson to scamper to 2nd. Fitzgerald’s throw down to 2nd sailed into center field, getting past Mookie Wilson and allowing Anderson to move to 3rd. Anderson was waved home and Mookie’s throw home was late. Danny Heep had three hits filling in for an injured Darryl Strawberry in right. Another rough outing for Fernando Valenzuela (L 0-2) who went 8 innings and allowed 4 runs (2 earned).
Giants 7, Cardinals 3
4 straight losses for the beleaguered St. Louis Cardinals, as Joaquin Andujar allowed a 3-run homer to Dusty Baker, 2-run homer to Johnny LeMaster, and solo homer to Manny Trillo. If there was good news for the Cards, it was that Andujar got 6.2 innings of work in, leaving just 1.1 for the bullpen to pick up. The Cards’ bullpen has been overworked.
