Season Preview: #18 Oakland Athletics

Rickey Henderson

1984 sits somewhere between two positive eras for the Oakland Athletics.

They were the powerhouse of the mid-70s American League.

And then there were four division titles in 5 years from the late ’80s to early ’90s.

But this time?  ’84?  With a 40-year old Joe Morgan getting 116 games under his belt?  It’s not so great.

Interestingly, the 1984 Athletics finished tops in the AL in runs scored and dead last in runs allowed.

So, yes, you do have 25-year old Rickey Henderson (.293, 16 HR, 66 SB), Carney Lansford (.300, 14 HR), Dave Kingman (35 HR, 118 RBI) and Dwayne Murphy (33 HR).

But you also have Steve McCatty (8-14, 4.76), Bill Krueger (10-10, 4.75) and Larry Sorensen (6-13, 4.91).

Games with the ’84 A’s will be hard to get through.  I prefer games that are 4-2 and those will be few and far between when this team is on my scorecard.

Mostly I will spend their games rooting for Rickey to steal bases and Kingman and Morgan to fall on their faces.
